Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group (GEAG) is a voluntary organisation that undertakes development initiatives to impact positively the lives of the poor, deprived and marginalized through a people-centered approach focusing on their participation, awareness and empowerment for sustainable development. Organisation's efforts focus on Sustainable Livelihood of Small and marginal farmers through Sustainable Agriculture approach. GEAG has introduced and continuously engaged in  promoting the LEISA Techniques (Low External Input Sustainable Agriculture) in Uttar Pradesh with the giving equal value to people's knowledge, traditional concepts and practices, generates awareness of people's rights, and promotes experiential learning. It adopts a multi-dimensional strategy to upgrade knowledge and strengthening the capacities of stakeholders, policy advocacy, and intervenes at various levels.

The small and marginal farmers are in majority in state (90% of total farmers) survive on marginal land holdings of less than one acre. They have hard by any assets and consequently very low returns. They do not have access to information and techniques also of increasing production and making optimum use of available resources. The landless are extremely poor and lack skills and education to make use of the opportunities available in the allied sectors like poultry, goatry, dairy, etc. Land patta and transfer of land ownership consequently has been an issue in the state  on which GEAG strives to influence policy makers for inclusion of the issue of landless in policies and planning.

GEAG also strongly focuses on the Rights of Women Farmers that perform 80% of the agricultural operations but are not recognized as farmers. They do not enjoy rights over land, they do not have access to control over resources neither they have the rights to take decisions related to farming within the households. GEAG strives for inclusion of women farmer’s issues into policy document as well.

As a result, the above are at the lowest rung of the ladder in all spheres and continue to suffer discrimination and exploitation. This is the reason GEAG has selected the small and marginal farmers, the landless and women farmers as their target groups in their area of operation, and also effectively lobbied for  inclusion of their interest in the Agriculture policy of U.P.
