Community Capacities to Cope up with Flood

Compilation of popular indigenous agriculture  practices in Flood Prone Area of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, India.

1People living with Flood have their own way, knowledge and skill that increase their coping and adaptive capacity to flood. Changing situation of climate has negative impact on the lives of people as it directly affect people’s livelihood. But people living in flood stressed zones have their own traditional practices and knowledge that help them to cope up effectively. Such traditional knowledge of flood mitigation and farming practices with judicious management of land and water increase their adaptive capacity to flood. But such existing traditional knowledge are not judged and given importance by other people who are not directly associated such as policy makers, agriculture scientists, and other. On the other hand, these knowledge and practices are confined to some limited area even to some villages. But these knowledge are importantly needed to disseminate within the community residing in other flood affected regions so that people can learn, adopt and be prepared more strongly to face the flood.

2GEAG with 20 Civil Society Organisation of 7 districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh ( Gorakhpur, Maharazganj, Deoria, SidharthNagar, Behraich, Kushinagar and Ghazipur) took up the initiative to identify and document  such popular indigenous practices and published a compilation  of 100 Agriculture practices and Related activities under 4 categories ( Agriculture Practices- Pre flood, During flood and Post flood, Preparedness before flood, Land and Water Management and Advocacy  efforts).Oxfam-Novib has supported to bring out this Research study and document.
