Gorakhpur city is vulnerable to
disasters due to its geographical
location in the tarai of
Nepal Himalayas and the region
being prone to floods. The recent
climate change impacts
have
exacerbated this venerability.
It is observed that the most affected
group is poor and marginalized.
In the process of developing a City
Resilience Strategy, it was realized
that the week infra structure and
governance can be addressed through the
community led initiative on local
actions and advocacy. The youth of the
city are expected to play a crucial
role in this direction.
Under ACCCRN process, Gorakhpur
Environmental Action Group and District
Disaster Management Authority,
Government of Uttar Pradesh jointly
initiated a massive campaign for the
awareness amongst youths in the city on
“Disaster, Climate Change and
Environment”. The outcomes and findings
of city vulnerability analysis and
sectoral studies have been packaged in
form of a mobile exhibition. The
exhibition comprises of 32 hanging
displays, awareness folders, power
point presentation and quiz competition
etc. More than 10 thousand students of
various educational institutions of the
city have been oriented through this
exhibition, discussions and quiz
competition.
The campaign started on 3rd
November 2011, flagged by Chief
Development Officer of Gorakhpur
District, and continued for a period of
14 days. Media covered the
events in a big way.
