Adaptation and Livelihood Resilience (Supported by IDRC and ISET)


1This is an Action Research based project based on reducing vulnerability and enhancing adaptive capacity of community residing in flood prone area. This concept emphasizes the development of sustainable livelihood and environmental system by adapting to opportunities inherent in hydrological variability and processes of socio-economic and water resource system change. The goal is to focus on improved adaptation and livelihood resilience of communities in regions vulnerable to climate variability and change of an extreme nature.


4Implemented in Gorakhpur and Maharajganj, the objectives are –

  • To access degrees of  vulnerability of communities and to understand local adaptation strategies/ measures in regions subject to extreme climatic events like floods, droughts, etc.
  • To prepare an action plan in participation with stakeholders for enhancing adaptation and livelihood resilience, and implement set activities.

  • To promote capacity enhancement through adaptive learning within local communities in ways that enable adoption of adaptive management strategies for responding to extreme climatic variability by changing the nature of interaction within communities the one hand and between communities, Government bodies and international agencies on the other.

  • To engage with policy makers at the national and international level in institutionalizing vulnerability reduction, adaptation and preparedness of institutions, communities and individuals to cope with floods and droughts through shared learning dialogues and dissemination of research findings.

A study in this regard has been carried out in 10 villages of U.P. and Bihar, issues have been identified and action plans are being developed. Research design, methodologies and outcomes of  has been appreciated at international forum and published in a collaborative developed document ‘Working with the Winds of change”.
