Small Marginal & Women Farmer

Small and marginal farmers, comprising about 72 percent of the agrarian workforce of UP, are a neglected lot. Our efforts range from trying to securing land rights for them, especially women farmers, struggling with them so that they can get their entitlements on the one hand and securing livelihoods through sustainable agriculture. To this end we have developed demonstrable models of economically, socially and ecologically viable models of agriculture and are advocating for their upscaling and replication by the government. We have also sought to unionise them by the forming and supporting the Laghu Seemant Krishak Morcha (LSKM) and also a network of NGOs working on Sustainable Agriculture (SAN-UP). Presently our efforts are directed towards the formulation and adoption by the state government of a pro-farmer Agriculture Policy that has been developed by the people themselves. We are also advocating for larger efforts by civil society and the state to build up the resilience of farmers to climate change and preparing them to withstand the risks and shocks of disasters.

Encouraging the unionization of small farmers as Laghu Seemant Krishak Morcha (Small Marginal Farmers, Union)- an independent farmers body registered under Trade Union Act, has helped to create a positive dialogue with Government, Donors and Research Institutions. The thrust of this forum has been sustainability of agriculture for small holding farmers, reduction of input costs and related support mechanisms like non-chemical bio inputs, better access to markets and rational support prices, information and extension and other such approaches addressing the larger interests of small- marginal farmers.

Women contribute in harvesting activities is 65% but merely 28% have control on selling of crop produce.
