Rights Of Women Farmers

Promoting gender equity is a central pivot of our efforts. Our advocacy efforts range from advocating for women’s right to property, recognizing them as cultivators to trying to empower them through building institutions such as self help groups and federating them. We launched for instance the Aroh campaign for the recognition of women’s rights to land and asserting their identities as farmers. The campaign is an ongoing one, and has spread to 50 districts of UP, spear-headed by nodal NGOs in each of the five regions (Western, Ruhelkhand, Vindhya-Kaimur, Eastern and Central) of the state.

`Aroh' is a unique campaign launched in Uttar Pradesh for the rights and interests of women farmers. The prevailing status of less than 1 percent participation in extension activities less than 6 percent land ownership and other related factors severely hinder the women farmers in accessing their rights.

District legal forums developed in various districts of U.P. have involved lawyers in advocacy for the interests of women farmers. Needed changes in existing legislations related to control of women lover land, natural resources, information and extension are in process through the coordinated efforts. Alliance building with other actors and national movements have been helpful in this regard.
