Campaign : Polythene, No More!

Plastic menace has become a thorny issue in many of the areas. In the absence of any conservative mechanism over control of usage of plastics, particularly bags, the practice of bringing vegetables, edibles, groceries and other house hold items in plastic bags has hit an all time high, causing degradation of environment everywhere. This indiscriminate use and disposal of plastic in the city has aggravated water logging and increase of vector diseases.

The city is expecting more rainfall in fewer days due to impacts of climate change -which means more water logging. In such situations, plastics and polythene tends to disrupt the drainage of water and hence aggravate the problems.

To curb or control the menace of plastic in the city the Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group in association with Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation has launched rigorous awareness campaign at school and public level to protect the environment, to educate the literate and illiterate people about the harmful effect of plastic and in form of benefits to the society.

The campaign Polythene, No More! was started with the support of NSS students on 15th November through flag off by the Mayor Ms. Anju Chaudhary, in M.G.P.G college. The entire campaign was conducted in three phases. In this campaign following activities were made:
1. Distribution of pamphlets and education materials
2. Spot speech with students
3. Rally
4. Puppet show
5. Exhibition on a mobile van

The awareness campaign was launched in various placesof city, with the help of street plays and puppet shows.

The campaign also included orientation of service clubs, women organization, citizen's groups and so on.

Most fascinating event in this entire awareness campaign was the co-operation and pro-active involvement of small children below the age of 10 years. It was conducted from 15th -19th December, 2009. In this process group of children in proper uniform motivated people in the market to adopt alternative means such cloths bag, paper bags instead of plastic bags.
