Climate Change Adaptation & Resilience

In the urban areas too, the poor are a neglected lot. In Gorakhpur, nearly one-third of the population (622701 according to the 2001 census) are poor, living mostly in the low-lying areas of the city . Climate change will affect them through flooding for instance by the Rapti river. Many of them depend on the Ramgarh Lake for livelihoods. The lake is under increasing threats from the pressures of urbanization. We have tied up with the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN). Our advocacy efforts have succeeded to the extent that we have been able to make the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation (GMC) partner us in our efforts to save the Ramgarh Lake. The city suffers from basic issues like sanitation, solid waste management and lack of potable water. The GMC has now drawn up extensive plans for tackling the first two issues and a solid waste management project for Rs. 156 million has been sanctioned. The central Ministry of Environment and Forests too has sanctioned a Rs 1500 million project for rejuvenating the Ramgarh Lake. Our campaign against plastic bags is continuing.

The models of decentralized solid waste management, improved drainage, orientation of students, organizing citizen groups and other such activities have helped in developing cities resilience.

The character of floods in changing... minor rivers are creating large scale losses, water retention periods are increasing.
