It is also important that these models developed for rural livelihoods are scaled and rural poor are able to develop the resilience in the changing climate conditions. Linkage of existing development programmes have been helpful in such efforts. Schemes like Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act (MNREGA) has potential for improving drainage situations in flood affected areas. The schemes of agriculture department, horticulture mission, Pisciculture etc. have enormously helped to farmers in enhancing their adaptive capacities.

Farmers own wisdom and local traditional knowledge help them in evolving mechanisms to deal with situations arising due to climate changes. Documentation of such practices, farmer to farmer dissemination and sharing such innovative approaches at large platforms have helped in influencing research agenda of academic institutions and setting the priorities. The approach also helped to create space for more local innovations and farmer experimentations.

Given the realities of climate change and the fact that the poor and the vulnerable will be the worst affected, our advocacy efforts are geared to enable the marginalized to better adapt to climate change and build up their resilience. In the rural areas, while we are working to build up the support structure through the developing community institutions and developing the capacity of the people, we are also advocating on a continuous basis for the government to recognize and adopt these models, including that of a people’s extension model.
