The analysis of Census 2011 has started coming in. The results
clearly indicated that the urbanization in India has grown at unprecedented
pace during last decade and the uniqueness of this growth is the
pace by which comparatively small and middle class cities are
growing. Most of cities in Uttar Pradesh, which still have a
predominant agriculture based livelihood, have marked a significant
growth. This rural-urban migration is posing newer challenges for
the urban governance of medium and smaller cities, which are already
struggling with limited resources and infra-structure.
Small farmers have also demonstrated in GEAG field areas how a sustained and resilient livelihood can be ensured through agriculture. Ramrati one of the small women farmer in Campierganj area of Gorakhpur was awarded as `Best Micro Entrepreneur' by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). She has evolved mechanisms of reducing risks in agriculture and higher net gains, by adopting ecological principles and agricultural bio-diversity. The small land holding farmers can perform well if adequate policy back-up and linkages of relevant programmes and schemes are ensured. The recent study undertaken by GEAG, on the status of migrant workers explain that the frustration of farmers due to declining agricultural gains-exacerbated by climate uncertainties, have pushed them to migrate to urban centers. These migrants are struggling with their identity and limited provisions of basic services in the city and subjected to exploitation of different kinds. GEAG is intensively working for strengthening of agriculture based livelihoods in rural areas and resilience of urban areas particularly in the context of climate change impacts. The research, implementation-pilots models and advocacy are the key pillars in addressing the rural-urban linkages and GEAG is working on the inter-complimentarily of these three pillars. The Annual Report of year 2010-11 has been recently published which provides the details of the activities taken-up by the organization. |
